Unlearning Worry

When you worry what does it accomplish? Do you find unsolved answers that you have been wasting time searching for? Do you feel better when you worry? Mostly, do you find a peace about the situation you are worrying about? I certainly don’t! When we worry it wastes our time and energy. Worrying does the complete opposite of helping us find the answers to our unsolved problems. Worrying about a situation sets you back instead of pushing you forward.

We are given 86,400 seconds each day. How many of those seconds do you spend worrying? Is it really worth it?

Now, I know what you are thinking… it’s not that easy to just stop worrying when you have grown up doing it your entire life. We have learned that, when life takes a rough turn, the first response should be to worry about it. “Am I going to be able to pay the bills on time?” “Am I going to have job security?” “Are my kids going to make it through the day without getting hurt?” There is so much that is out of order nowadays that we have learned by example to worry about any and all situations.

As believers in Jesus Christ we are given a prescription that can cure this worry. But, there’s one little catch: you have to let God take the worry away.

Philippians 4:6-7 in the Message Bible states:

“Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.”

What is Paul saying to do instead of worry? Paul is telling us to pray instead of worry. In other words, whatever it is that you are letting control you, because worry controls us, give it to God. Pray and GIVE God the burden (the worry), place it into His hands because it is clearly too big for us to handle! We cannot simple “cure” this worry on our own. We need someone stronger.

If we continue to read on in Philippians 4 verses 8 through 9, it says:

“Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.”

Take a moment to dwell on that last part… “Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into His most excellent harmonies”. God, the creator of the world, will work YOU, His creation, into HIS “most excellent harmonies”. There will be the peace of God that comes over you and you will not have a need for worry in your life anymore. His PEACE will DISPLACE your worry.

So, let me ask again, we are given 86,400 seconds in a single day, how many of those are you going to waste worrying?
