Breaking The Bondage Of Sin

Standard

Do you have that one thing in your life that you did wrong and cannot seem to move on from? Maybe someone cut you off while you were driving to work and you responded in a bad manner? Or maybe you just slipped and gave into a temptation that you’ve struggled with in the past? Sometimes we aren’t even worried about the current sin in our lives, but our minds are captivated by a sin that was so wrong from our past that we cannot forget about it, accept Christ’s forgiveness, and move on.

We all have sins. There is only one without sin and that is Jesus Christ Himself. Paul states in the book of Romans that “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God’’ (3.23). This is true, but Paul didn’t stop there. He let us know that there is still hope for humanity. In verse 24 he said: “…All are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Just as “All have sinned” so “All are justified” if we choose to put our faith and trust in the redemption that Christ offers.

Knowing who Jesus is and what He really did for humanity is important to know. Jesus died for our sins. Jesus died to wash away our sins. Through Him, our sins are gone.

When we sin, the hardest part is asking for forgiveness… Or is it? Maybe for you the more difficult piece is accepting the forgiveness that Christ so freely offers.  You see, maybe that one sin that is from your past that is lingering in your mind corrupts your thinking. Maybe it tells you that it was too wrong, too bad, and that Jesus will never forgive a sin that bad. This is something we have all struggled with.

Sometimes this makes us feel depressed and hopeless. We begin to feel like Jesus is disappointed with us, and as a result, we cannot face Him because of our “unforgiveable” sin. Let me say this, Jesus is grieved by our sin. He is angered by our sin. But His anger only last for a moment… The Psalmist said in Psalm 30.5: “For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime! Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.”  He is not going to shame you and shut you out. Instead, in His love, Jesus responds with forgiveness… but not just forgiveness, He goes a step further! Jesus extends His favor towards us and showers us with His joy! Hallelujah! When we are in the pit of despair because of our sin how many know our “Worthless self” needs some FAVOR? Our “Devastation” needs some JOY? God’s provision supplies both.

Why? Because that is who Jesus is! God is a good Father that loves us unconditionally and if we look to Paul’s letter to the church of Corinth in 1 Corinthians 13, we can see that love keeps no record of wrongs. We as humans seem to never forget our sin or the sins of others. We’re good at keeping records. But not so with God… God does not have a file that stores up every sin that you’ve committed. He doesn’t keep tallies. He keeps no record of our wrongs. Jesus forgives us of our wrongs. COMPLETELY. ERASED. GONE!

There is a catch. We have to recognize that Jesus is our mighty healer and let Him forgive our sins. If we continue to cling to our past sins, we can easily become chained to them in bondage. We will be a slave to them. But friends, let me tell you this, Jesus can break those chains! He has come to set the captive free! Jesus was sent to the Earth to fulfill a mission for His Heavenly Father. His mission was to “Testify of the Truth.” You can check it out in John 18.37: ‘Jesus answered (Pilate), “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”‘  The truth is this: God so LOVED that He sent Jesus to die in our place and take our punishment for sin so we could be set free from the hold of sin. The truth is: if you confess your sins He is FAITHFUL AND JUST to forgive your sins and cleanse you from ALL unrighteousness. The truth is: Jesus came to preach GOOD NEWS to the poor and bind up their wounds, He came to RELEASE those in darkness and set the captive FREE! I could keep going… The Bible is packed full of the TRUTH that Jesus came to testify of and bear witness to. And if we are on His side, if we are on the side of truth, then we will listen to Jesus. That means we’ll accept His forgiveness because He has promised it to us. That’s the truth! We need to quit believing the lie that says we are not forgiven or worthy of receiving His forgiveness. Some of us need to encourage ourselves with truth today because we’ve been believing the lies of Satan for far too long. We’re allowing his lies to control our destiny. We’re allowing his lies to keep us trapped and living beneath our privileged position in Christ.  God says: NO MORE! Listen to Me! Listen to MY VOICE! For I am the one who tells you the truth!

Friends, press into Jesus today. Seek Him. Talk to Him. Let Him come into your heart and break that bondage of sin in your life. Let Him set you free through the truth and forgiveness He has to offer. Truth and Forgiveness break the bondage of sin.
